{"id":10347,"date":"2024-09-26T17:49:16","date_gmt":"2024-09-27T00:49:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/?p=10347"},"modified":"2024-10-11T01:11:59","modified_gmt":"2024-10-11T08:11:59","slug":"south-mediterranean-getaway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/south-mediterranean-getaway","title":{"rendered":"Greco-Roman Getaway with an Adriatic Twist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>See my southern Med wanderings as I sail from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katakolon.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Katakolon<\/a>, gateway to Olympia, onto the picturesque UNESCO Heritage Sites of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelandleisure.com\/corfu-greece-travel-guide-8670279\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Corfu<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/visitdubrovnik.hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dubrovnik<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/alongatravel.com\/what-to-do-in-kotor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kotor<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stokedtotravel.com\/ravenna-italy-travel-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ravenna<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>As the Oceania Riviera departed from <a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/taste-of-italy-and-malta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Taranto<\/a>, it was full steam ahead for Katakolon, the jumping off point to the birthplace of the <a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olympic Games<\/a>. When I visited the port in 2016, it had nothing but a dusty main street and beach bar outfitted with bike pedals where patrons could pedal in their seats for probably the sole entertainment in town. Everyone used to head straight to Olympia, bypassing the sleepy community.<\/p>\n<p>Now hailed as the number 2 cruise port in Greece, I was shocked to see it chock-a-block with tourist shops and jewelry stores. A short walk from the cruise dock is the <a href=\"https:\/\/townhouseco.co.uk\/thing-to-do\/boschetto-the-durrell-gardens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boschetto Garden<\/a>, a nicely landscaped park with lovely views of the ocean and Old Fortress nearby. It was renamed in 2006 as The Durrell Gardens to honor Lawrence and Gerald Durrell, whose writings helped popularize Corfu as a travel destination. Part of the Dinaric Alps, the 1,352 ft mountain can be ascended by cable car or on foot from the city. Having hiked up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthtrekkers.com\/hiking-ladder-of-kotor-montenegro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ladder of Kotor<\/a> last time, I decided to just browse around the outdoor market and stroll around town. The original Ursian Cathedral was built around the 5th century when Ravenna just became the capital of the Western Roman Empire. The aging edifice was eventually replaced by this Baroque duomo (cathedral) in the 1700\u2019s. Except for the campanile (bell tower) and the crypt, most of the original structure, including its mosaics were demolished. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ravennamosaici.it\/en\/the-cathedral-of-resurrection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cattedrale metropolitana della Risurrezione di Nostro Signore Ges\u00f9 Cristo<\/a> (Metropolitan Cathedral of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ) was elevated to status of minor basilica in 1960.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10359\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10359\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ravenna-Ristorante-Corte-Cabiria-Composite.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10359 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ravenna-Ristorante-Corte-Cabiria-Composite.jpg\" alt=\"Complimentary appetizer and dessert at Corte Cabiria e Cabiria \" width=\"700\" height=\"975\" srcset=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ravenna-Ristorante-Corte-Cabiria-Composite.jpg 700w, https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ravenna-Ristorante-Corte-Cabiria-Composite-215x300.jpg 215w, https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ravenna-Ristorante-Corte-Cabiria-Composite-640x891.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10359\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Food for thought.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It was an amazing dining experience at Ravenna\u2019s highly rated Ristorante Corte Cabiria e Cabiria Wine Bar. I went there for one of my favorite dishes \u2013 sea urchin with pasta, but the complimentary appetizers and desserts definitely made me a fan! This beautifully presented amuse-bouche of crunchy cheese ball filled with ham was delectable, and the house dessert of peanut cookie with passion fruit gelee proved equally sublime.<\/p>\n<p>Our final stop would have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.italia.it\/en\/veneto\/venice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Venice<\/a> (Venezia). But due to local concerns about tourism\u2019s environmental impact, cruise ships over 25,000 GT (gross tonnage) are barred from the Venetian lagoon. So Riviera passengers were disembarked in Trieste and transferred by bus to Marco Polo International Airport for their return flights.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been visiting Venice since the 80\u2019s and reveled in La Serenissima\u2019s buzzy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walksofitaly.com\/blog\/food-and-wine\/budget-dining-in-venice-italy-with-cicchetti-at-bacari\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">b\u00e0cari<\/a> (cicchetti bars), exquisite artisanal masks, <a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/adriatic-travels-venice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enchanting architecture, and beguiling waterways<\/a>.
