On our second day,\u00a0we managed to wine and dine through all three specialties and are glad to report them to be excellent as advertised!<\/p>\n<p>Gujo Hachiman&#8217;s other claim to fame is its &#8216;incredible inedible&#8217; industry. The town&#8217;s numerous workshops supply <a href=\"https:\/\/japan-brand.jnto.go.jp\/crafts\/other_craft\/97\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shokuhin sanpuru<\/a> (aka fake food) to about 80% of the nation&#8217;s restaurants. We ended up taking a hands-on tour factory tour after sampling sake\u00a0at the Ueda sakaya (sake store). On both sides of this pedestrian-only street are some well preserved Edo-era homes built in the Kyoto style. The buildings, like New Orleans&#8217; famed shot gun houses, are deeper than they are wide.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3148\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3148\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Gujo-Hachiman-Yanaka-Komichi-Canal.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3148 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Gujo-Hachiman-Yanaka-Komichi-Canal.jpg\" alt=\"Public art along stream\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Gujo-Hachiman-Yanaka-Komichi-Canal.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Gujo-Hachiman-Yanaka-Komichi-Canal-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Gujo-Hachiman-Yanaka-Komichi-Canal-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3148\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Whimsical public art in the stream accompanied by colored marbles seemingly randomly strewn on the walkway and surrounding walls.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Purportedly some 80 thousand round rocks are used in the paving, and &#8216;80,000&#8217; is pronounced as &#8216;hachiman&#8217; in Japanese. Of course, this may just be another urban legend\u2026<\/p>\n<p>We visited Sample Kobo and signed up for a taiken (class) to make fruit tart replicas. It was fascinating to watch the staff help tourists make fake lettuce. Then\u00a0it was time to try our hand at filling\u00a0heart shaped tartlets\u00a0with whipped cream and berries. It was a blast and we triumphantly took our creations as mementos of the visit.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j8yirCy4vYE?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The gift shop proffers some very realistic\u00a0and imaginative souvenirs that are a far cry from the pedestrian versions we see back home. The dining table was set with all these dishes\u00a0at the START of our dinner. But considering the cost, anyone with strict dietary preferences should check into local seasonal offerings before booking any kaiseki dinner.<\/p>\n<p>A benefit of staying at ryokans is that most provide yukatas (summer kimonos) and getas (traditional wooden sandals) so guests can wear them at the lodge or out to town for the dance. The Gujo Odori traditionally is held at different locations such as the Gujo Castle, temples, parks, or town streets on designated nights. We were only able to catch one night of dances. Luckily the venue was very close to our ryokan so although walking in getas was uncomfortable to the uninitiated, hoofing it back after the dance wasn&#8217;t a crippling concern, so to speak!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3158\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3158\" style=\"width: 790px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Gujo-Hachiman-Gujo-Odori.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3158 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Gujo-Hachiman-Gujo-Odori.jpg\" alt=\"Musicians and dancers in the Gujo Odori.\" width=\"790\" height=\"496\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3158\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Musicians and dancers in the Gujo Odori.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I love elaborate traditional kimonos, but I also enjoy the fun yukatas worn by some of the young people in this video. I think since there was no dance on our first night out, the river was dark (or we didn&#8217;t go by the right river!). On the second night we were busy eating and dancing so it totally slipped my mind. It sits on a hill about 20 minutes from town. We entertained ourselves taking pix as we hiked up the steep switchbacks, so it took a lot longer. As we waited in line, we ran into a fellow traveler from last night. Turned out she is the niece of Japanese artist Kawai Kanjir\u014d, whose <a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/japan-land-of-spectacular-festivals-foods-castles-kyoto-day-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Memorial House<\/a> we toured in Kyoto a couple days ago. Small town, small world!<\/p>\n<p>All too soon, it was time to leave Japan. After lunch, we took the bus back to Osaka and flew out the next morning. Though a whirlwind tour, it successfully hit all the highlights: we reveled\u00a0in the colorful pageantry of the <a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/japan-land-of-spectacular-festivals-foods-castles-osaka-tenjin-matsuri-day-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tenjin Matsuri<\/a>, marveled at the cultural splendors of <a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/japan-land-of-spectacular-festivals-foods-castles-kyoto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kyoto<\/a> and were party to (no pun intended) the centuries old festivities at Gujo Hachiman\u2019s Gujo Odori. Japan is\u00a0a country\u00a0rich with festivals and traditions, where thousands\u00a0turn out\u00a0to celebrate through\u00a0music, dance, processions and floats.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard not to be charmed.
