{"id":3763,"date":"2014-01-07T12:29:12","date_gmt":"2014-01-07T20:29:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/?p=3763"},"modified":"2021-06-25T09:53:50","modified_gmt":"2021-06-25T16:53:50","slug":"lemurs-wildebeest-wild-african-safari-adventure-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/lemurs-wildebeest-wild-african-safari-adventure-part-2","title":{"rendered":"Song of the Lemurs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was a lot of fun seeing the inquisitive <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/animals\/ring-tailed-lemur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ring-tailed lemurs<\/a> and athletic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZcLkgQBmw54&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dancing sifakas<\/a> in Madagascar&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalworldsafaris.com\/africa\/madagascar\/berenty-reserve\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Berenty Private Reserve<\/a>. Next up: looking for the\u00a0<a title=\"Indri Lemur\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wildmadagascar.org\/wildlife\/lemurs-indri.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indri<\/a>\u00a0lemurs, whose soulful songs echo in the <a href=\"https:\/\/madagascar-tourisme.com\/en\/discover\/the-east\/andasibe-mantadia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andasibe-Mantadia National Park<\/a>, some 3 hours outside\u00a0the capital of Tana.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the semi-arid spiny forests of Berenty National Park,\u00a0Andasibe is a rainforest with abundant biodiversity, including many endemic and endangered species. We sprang for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalworldsafaris.com\/africa\/madagascar\/vakona-forest-lodge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vakona Forest Lodge<\/a> as its Lemur Island promised a close encounter with several species of lemurs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3766\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3766\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Madagascar-Countryside.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3766 \" src=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Madagascar-Countryside.jpg\" alt=\"Madagascar countryside\" width=\"1000\" height=\"704\" srcset=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Madagascar-Countryside.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Madagascar-Countryside-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Madagascar-Countryside-426x300.jpg 426w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3766\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">We traversed the lush countryside again on our way to Andasibe.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Blessed by abundant rainfall, the rice paddies in Madagascar yield as much as 4 crops a year. Homes can be built from whatever material is at hand, so they can be anything from bamboo, brick to stucco. The troops greeted us with overwhelming enthusiasm since we came bearing gifts of bananas. Another meal of <a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/pursuit-lemurs-wildebeest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">romazava<\/a>, a stew made with zebu, accompanied by salsa, this time washed down by coconut <a href=\"https:\/\/travel2madagascar.com\/what-to-drink-in-madagascar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rhum arrang\u00e9<\/a>, did me in again. Having tested negative for malaria, I was given prescriptions and summarily discharged. The total bill for the emergency room visit, test, as well as medications for fever and turista came to 200,000 Malagasy ariaries, a whopping $90 USD! We failed to find the elusive <a href=\"https:\/\/denverzoo.org\/animals\/aye-aye\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aye-aye<\/a> but caught a couple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=h_bNO7MelXI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mouse lemurs<\/a> nesting in the rafters of our cabin!
