{"id":4717,"date":"2015-04-16T21:21:24","date_gmt":"2015-04-17T04:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/?p=4717"},"modified":"2020-07-15T19:25:23","modified_gmt":"2020-07-16T02:25:23","slug":"s-american-travel-blog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/s-american-travel-blog","title":{"rendered":"A South American Tango: Street Art, Penguins, Gauchos &#038; Milongas, Part I"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I often fantasize about giving up our typical frog-marching vacations to invest in some quality time chilling at sidewalk cafes &#8211; which happens every time we scurry harriedly past the packed caf\u00e9-lined sidewalks, be it at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/rome-to-rio-a-photoblog-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rome or Rio<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Of course when I started planning the itinerary for our 15 night Trans-Canal cruise, all such thoughts went straight out the window and it morphed into an odyssey with\u00a013 stops in 7 countries over 4 weeks\u2026 This is the first of my multi-part blog post that shares my\u00a0trip&#8217;s highlights\u00a0and\u00a0covers Cartagena, Colon as well as\u00a0the Panama Canal transit.<\/p>\n<p>After overnighting in Everglades City we boarded the <a title=\"Celebrity Infinity \" href=\"https:\/\/www.celebritycruises.com\/ships\/celebrity-infinity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Celebrity Infinity<\/a>, our home away from home as we sailed from Fort Lauderdale to Valpraiso, Chile. Our first stop was <a title=\"Cartagena, Colombia\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/colombia\/caribbean-coast\/cartagena\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cartagena<\/a>, Colombia. I booked a photography tour with photojournalist <a title=\"Joaquin Sarmiento \" href=\"https:\/\/www.joaquinsarmiento.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joaquin Sarmiento<\/a> to shore up my literally and figuratively shaky photographic skills.<\/p>\n<p>Once racked by drug violence\u00a0Cartagena is now relatively safe. The tour wound through some gritty areas but these scruffy barrios are rapidly getting\u00a0spiffed up. America with free slaves. We booked a bird\/nature walk with Ren\u00e9 Guardiola, a local tour operator. Given birds and wildlife are most active in the early morning, we knew starting around 10 am was less than ideal. But we hadn&#8217;t counted on the driver first being MIA (our guide had to hunt him down with binoculars) and then getting lost trying to leave town. The chef seemed to have devoted more time on food presentation than execution. We had insipid soups, overcooked salmon and soggy souffl\u00e9s. The neighboring cargo ship clearly shows the difference in water levels between the 2 lanes.
