We were forced to cancel a morning tour and decided to focus the rest of the day on 2 of the most iconic sights in Paris: the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcdetriompheparis.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arc de Triomphe<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/eiffel-tower\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tour Eiffel <\/a>(Eiffel Tower).<\/p>\n<p>The plan was to visit the Arc the Triomphe at Place de l\u2019Etoile for panoramic views in the afternoon and then head over to Tour Eiffel just before sunset to capture the dusk and night views from the Tower.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5522\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5522\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Arc-de-Triomphe.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5522 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Arc-de-Triomphe.jpg\" alt=\"Carvings &amp; inscriptions in the walls &amp; arches of the Arch de Triomphe\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Arc-de-Triomphe.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Arc-de-Triomphe-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Arc-de-Triomphe-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Arc-de-Triomphe-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5522\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Inspired by the Roman Arch of Titus, the Arc\u2019s inner and outer walls are adorned by elaborate carvings with inscriptions of names of major French victories and generals in the Napoleonic wars.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Standing beneath the vaults of the Arc de Triomphe, one feels the monument\u2019s heroic scale \u2013 in fact, French pilot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/HistoryPorn\/comments\/53ehc8\/charles_godefroy_flies_under_the_arc_de_triomphe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Charles Godefroy<\/a> flew\u00a0a biplane through it in 1919 as a stunt!<\/p>\n<p>I had hoped to see the lighting of the eternal flame at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eutouring.com\/unknown_soldier_eternal_flame.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tomb of the Unknown Soldier<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0the base of the\u00a0Arc, but the Eiffel Tower won out, so maybe next time&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5523\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5523\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Arc-De-Triomphe-Spiral-Staircase.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5523 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Arc-De-Triomphe-Spiral-Staircase.jpg\" alt=\"Looking up the stairs to the rooftop of the Arc de Triomphe\" width=\"1000\" height=\"759\" srcset=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Arc-De-Triomphe-Spiral-Staircase.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Arc-De-Triomphe-Spiral-Staircase-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Arc-De-Triomphe-Spiral-Staircase-768x583.jpg 768w, https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Arc-De-Triomphe-Spiral-Staircase-395x300.jpg 395w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5523\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Since the elevator is reserved for the elderly and infirm, all \u2018regular\u2019 tourists have to hoof all 164 ft of it up to the rooftop. Twelve wide avenues radiate from Place de l&#8217;\u00c9toile, making it truly the \u2018Square of the Star\u2019! In the distance is La Grande Arch, the 20th century rendition of the Arc de Triomphe.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>La Grande Arch is the visual anchor of the massive la D\u00e9fense, France\u2019s Manhattan on steroids and home to many of Europe\u2019s tallest high rises. While it will be a great view of the City of Lights (literally), we would be too high up to\u00a0discern\u00a0anything. We learnt the hard wat that some trains don\u2019t stop at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.chateauversailles.fr\/homepage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Versailles<\/a>, but quickly got into full swing as we entered the massive grounds of the ch\u00e2teau. Although considered Baroque in style, the elegant architecture is a study in restraint compared to its Italian contemporaries.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.chateauversailles.fr\/explore-the-estate\/the-palace\/the-palace\/the-royal-chapel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Royal Chapel<\/a> was built in honor of Saint Louis, the patron saint of the Bourbons. I had studied it in my interior design class but nothing beats seeing the real thing &#8211; even if it were in between a tsunami of tourists every few minutes! The massive room is designed with 17 sets of arches along its length \u2013 windows on one side looks onto the gardens while the other side is mirror-covered to amplify the exterior views. The red marble of the Languedoc region used for this palace was the reason for its original moniker, the Mable Trianon.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.chateauversailles.fr\/grand-trianon-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grand Trianon<\/a>, with its own park on the grounds of Versailles, was originally built for the mistress of Louis XIV. It was subsequently commandeered as residence for the \u2018royals\u2019 and even Napoleon &amp; his empress spent time there. Empress Marie Louise of Austria used part of this large room as a sitting area alongside her sleeping alcove. There are tables with drawers to hold needlework or games, and an abundance of upholstered seating to accommodate the crowd.
