I decided to end our trip in the City of Lights, a last hurrah for Holiday shopathon, sightseeing and gluttonous indulgence before heading home. The high speed TGV train ride to Paris from Chalon-sur-Sa\u00f4ne, where we disembarked, was a scant 3.5 hrs. Having stayed in the Left Bank and Marais districts before, I opted for a hotel by the Eiffel Tower. This would put us within striking distance of the yummy goodness of Les Gourmandises d’Eiffel, which has the best pain au chocolats and sweet croissants in Paris!<\/p>\n

\"Great<\/a>

Designed by Jacques Gr\u00fcber in Neo-byzantine style, the iconic stained glass dome of Galeries Lafayette Haussmann<\/a> makes a masterful statement. Strands of lights and baubles dripping off the dome added\u00a0a festive vibe.<\/p>\n

\"Display<\/a>
Display in one of the children\u2019s departments.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

A sci-fi theme with cute robot-like mannequins (seemed like they were all girls) was running through the season\u2019s displays.<\/p>\n

\"Rooftop<\/a>

It may not look like much, but this fruitful partnership between the department store and an organic urban farming startup is netting 6 tons of tomatoes and 18,000 bottles of craft beer brewed from the garden\u2019s crop of hops.<\/p>\n

\"Fa\u00e7ade<\/a>
Fa\u00e7ade of Printemps flagship store.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Printemps<\/a> Haussmann pioneered animated Christmas window displays and is one of the biggest department stores in Paris. Dating back to the 1800\u2019s, its distinctive fa\u00e7ade is classified as a historical monument.<\/p>\n

\"Our<\/a>

Intrigued by VizEat (now called EatWith), an online platform which helps tourists book meals and cooking classes with local foodies and home chefs around the world, I reserved a Tapas Dinner for two the night we returned to Paris.\u00a0There are offerings to suit any budget & food experiences, and pricing for dinners often include\u00a0all wine.\u00a0But it’s the chance to share a meal at a local’s home that I find compelling\u00a0and the evening wildly exceeded my expectations. Alison\u00a0was an incredibly gracious hostess and accomplished cook \u2013 8 dishes, 3 bottles of wine and 4 hours later, we finally\u00a0bid her ‘au revoir’…<\/p>\n

\"Four<\/a>
I was amazed that Alison made most of this scrumptious spread that day.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The feast kicked off with a colorful trio of carrot, asparagus & beet soups, then came salmon cr\u00e8me br\u00fbl\u00e9e, chicken with truffle scented potatoes and bacon & tomato confit palmiers.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/a>
The house made foie gras, which has to be made overnight, is to die for!!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

They were followed by foie gras alternating with tomato confit on toasted baguette, beef carpaccio with Parmesan cheese, scallop ceviche, and last but not least,\u00a0financiers as dessert!<\/p>\n

We chatted about everything under the sun and time flew by. It was great food, great company \u2013 we couldn\u2019t have asked for anything more! Alison kindly gave us the leftover foie gras from our fabulous dinner\u00a0and walked us to the metro station where we caught one of the last metros back to our hotel. It was certainly a evening to remember\u2026<\/p>\n

\"\u00a0The<\/a>

On my last visit to Paris, I had booked a Gastronomic Tour around\u00a0the Eiffel Tower through Paris Greeters<\/a>, a non-profit whose members generously volunteer to share their city with visitors. Unfortunately, a cancelled flight upended our plan<\/a>s.\u00a0This time, I decide to check out the Montmartre neighborhood where Vincent Van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec hung out.<\/p>\n

We met up with our guide Peter and soon got our first glimpse of the fabled\u00a0Moulin Rouge<\/a>, the cabaret that embodies Montmartre\u2019s Bohemian spirit and has entertained commoners and royals alike for over 150 years.<\/p>\n

\"Seafood<\/a>
Local shops overflowing with the bounty from land and sea.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Peter also took us to some of his favorite food shops. It\u2019s fall and choc full of mushrooms (my favorite produce) of all stripes! Love how fresh scallops are often sold in the shell throughout France, while my \u2018fresh scallops\u2019 back home come out of a giant 3 lb. can.<\/p>\n

\"Wall<\/a>
Le mur des je t’aime (Wall of love).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Created by a muralist and a calligrapher in 2000, this selfie magnet is made of 612 tiles of enameled lava. The phrase \u2018I love you\u2019 is written 311 times in 250 languages, including Navajo, Inuit and Esperanto!<\/p>\n

\"Restaurant<\/a>
Moulin de la Galette topped by a historic windmill from 1717.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Moulin Blute-fin and Moulin Radet<\/a> were the last two surviving windmills in Montmartre. Both were owned by the Debray family, who were millers and bakers. Moulin Blute-fin, where the Debrays sold their very popular galettes<\/a> and wine, was eventually renamed Moulin de la Galette. A regular haunt of Renoir, Van Gogh, Lautrec and Picasso, the eatery was depicted in Van Gogh’s Le Moulin de la Galette and Renoir’s Bal du moulin de la Galette.<\/p>\n

Moulin Blute-fin was saved from the wrecking ball in 1915, restored, and turned into private property, while Moulin Radet\u00a0went full circle to stand sentinel over Moulin de la Galette which reopened as a brasserie\u2026<\/p>\n

\"A<\/a>
A sculpture that immortalized the short story Le Passe-Muraille (Walker-Through-Walls) by Marcel Aym\u00e9.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Le Passe-Muraille<\/a> was about a man who discovered, and then subsequently abused, his unusual\u00a0power to walk through walls – until one day he lost that ability and got stuck in the wall. The 1989 statue by actor Jean Marais was created on the wall in front of Marcel Aym\u00e9\u2019s house as a tribute to the novelist.<\/p>\n

\"Basilica<\/a>
Basilique du Sacr\u00e9-C\u0153ur (Basilica of the Sacred Heart).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Of course we can\u2019t tour Montmartre without visiting the Basilica of the Sacred Heart<\/a>. The second most visited monument in Paris, it is located at the summit of Montmartre, the highest point in Paris. The Romanesque-Byzantine architecture, more akin to St. Mark’s Cathedral of Venice, was a reaction to the exuberant neo-Baroque ornamentations at the Palais Garnier.<\/p>\n

\"Equestrian<\/a>
Equestrian statue of Joan of Arc by sculptor Hippolyte-Jules Lef\u00e8bvre stood proudly in the front of the basilica.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The basilica was built as France tried to stoke nationalist pride after much internal turmoil and a recent military defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. Joan of Arc, as the country\u2019s national saint, defender of the country and its faith, fitted perfectly into the narrative.<\/p>\n

\"Taglierini<\/a>

For our final dinner, we booked a table at Maison de la Truffe<\/a>, aka The Truffle Palace, at Rue Marbeuf. It offered truffle and foie gras – all the good things in life – in a single dish. Who can resist that??<\/p>\n

\"Seasonal<\/a>

Among the other dishes we tried was another of the restaurant\u2019s classics, a pizza simply named \u2018The Famous\u2019. The bubbling cheese was a perfect foil for the shaved truffle and baby arugula atop the blistered cracker crust. We were so full that we decided to take half the pizza back. In fact, on our flight home the next day, we had a \u2018leftovers feast\u2019 of foie gras and truffle pizza – making it the best Cattle Class airline meal we\u2019ve ever had!<\/p>\n

\"Tour<\/a>

We decided to walk back to the hotel to work off some of the food and were rewarded by the sight of the Eiffel Tower ablaze against the velvet sky. We will, of course, be back\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
