The chilly, misty weather imparted an ethereal air to the bay, but made staying on the boat\u2019s decks a challenge. The line to get through the cave is long and chaotic. As with most tourist caves, it is lit in Technicolor.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3655\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3655\" style=\"width: 616px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Halong-Bay-Hang-Sung-Sot.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3655\" src=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Halong-Bay-Hang-Sung-Sot.jpg\" alt=\"Flowstone formation in Hang Sung Sot Cave in Halong Bay\" width=\"456\" height=\"608\" srcset=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Halong-Bay-Hang-Sung-Sot.jpg 500w, https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Halong-Bay-Hang-Sung-Sot-224x300.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3655\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dramatically lit flowstone formation in Hang Sung Sot.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wikitravel.org\/en\/Hanoi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hanoi<\/a> was primarily a transit point on our way to Halong\u00a0Bay, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anywhere.com\/blog\/is-sapa-worth-visiting-in-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sapa<\/a>, and our flight home, but we managed to have our share of ice cream and local specialties, such as ch\u1ea3 c\u00e1 l\u00e3 v\u1ecdng\u00a0(grilled fish with tumeric and dill).<\/p>\n<p>We went to <a href=\"https:\/\/explorepartsunknown.com\/seattle\/recipe-cha-ca-la-vong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ch\u1ea3 C\u00e1 L\u00e3 V\u1ecdng<\/a>, a hundred year old local institution which specializes in this famous dish. It&#8217;s a do-it-yourself affair, saut\u00e9ing chunks of fish in\u00a0a lots of oil, pile in tons of dill, greens, and other seasonings, and served with liberal amounts of herbs, condiments and\u00a0peanuts over a bowl of rice noodles. The crisp and airy Viet style baguette (with an amazingly light crackly\u00a0crust at 4 pm! on a hot &amp; humid day) filled with mystery meat, cilantro, house mayo, pickled carrots, daikons, peppers and other accoutrements made a truly memorable experience.<\/p>\n<p>We strolled around the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthtrekkers.com\/old-quarter-of-hanoi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Old Quarter<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/havecamerawilltravel.com\/places\/hoan-kiem-lake-hanoi-vietnam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ho\u00e0n Ki\u1ebfm Lake<\/a>, a major scenic spot in the city. The Hoang Lien Son mountain range is at the eastern extremity of the Himalayas and dominates the area. Although French and Chinese influences are evident in its architecture and cuisine, the results are still uniquely Vietnamese.
