During our stay, we experienced a heady mix of Colonial culture, vibrant streetscape, delightful parks and of course culinary nirvana in the Gastronomy Capital of the Americas!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8727\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8727\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Changing-of-Guard-Palacio-de-Gobierno-Lima.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8727 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Changing-of-Guard-Palacio-de-Gobierno-Lima.jpg\" alt=\"Changing of the Guard at the Government Palace\" width=\"800\" height=\"574\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8727\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Changing of the Guard.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A popular tourist attraction is the daily Changing of the Guard ceremony on the grounds of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gob.pe\/presidencia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Palacio de Gobierno<\/a> (Government Palace), on one side of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arrivalguides.com\/en\/Travelguide\/Lima\/doandsee\/plaza-de-armas-plaza-mayor-127163\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plaza de Armas<\/a> (aka Plaza Mayor), Lima&#8217;s historical town square. No tickets are required so we just strolled up to the Palace gates 15 minutes prior to secure a decent spot.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8726\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8726\" style=\"width: 569px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Celebrating-476-anniversary-of-the-City-of-Moquegua-outside-Palacio-de-Gobierno-Lima.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8726 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Celebrating-476-anniversary-of-the-City-of-Moquegua-outside-Palacio-de-Gobierno-Lima.jpg\" alt=\"Procession to celebrate the founding of the City of Moquegua\" width=\"569\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8726\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Birthday bash for the City of Moquegua.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It so happened Lima was celebrating the 476<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the founding of the City of Moquegua, and groups of dancers and musicians in colorful indigenous attire were congregating outside the Palace. Called Pasaje del Amor, it tees off from Jir\u00f3n de la Uni\u00f3n (Union Street), a major pedestrian street bordering Plaza de Armas.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8724\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8724\" style=\"width: 645px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Basilica-y-Convento-de-San-Francisco-Lima.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8724 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Basilica-y-Convento-de-San-Francisco-Lima.jpg\" alt=\"Balloon vendor waiting for customers outside church\" width=\"645\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8724\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Balloon vendor waiting for customers outside church.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Steps away from the town square is the baroque <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelandleisure.com\/travel-guide\/lima\/things-to-do\/iglesia-de-san-francisco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bas\u00edlica y Convento de San Francisco<\/a>\u00a0(Church and Monastery of St. Francis), one of the finest examples of Spanish Colonial architecture. There are 13 fountains in the Circuit, some of which are interactive (ie you can get soaking wet) so we wore footgear appropriate for the occasion. The topiary teapot and cups fit in nicely with the water themed park.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/91eSTOfA_J4?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span> <\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>El Circuito M\u00e1gico del Agua puts on a spectacular music, light and laser show at the Fuente de la Fantas\u00eda (Fantasia Fountain) 3 times a night. Woven into the multi-media extravaganza are highlights of the country\u2019s rich cultural heritage and biodiversity. From the soaring condors over <a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/peru-trek-machu-picchu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Machu Picchu<\/a>, to the Uros people on the <a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/lake-titicaca-machu-picchu-amazon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Floating Islands at Lake Titicaca<\/a>, the elusive jaguars and pink dolphins in the <a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/amazon-jungle-lodge-and-camp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon rainforest<\/a> to the morochucos cowboys on the plains of the Peruvian Andes, this show got them all covered!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8731\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8731\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Fuente-del-Arco-Iris-Rainbow-Fountain-El-Circuito-Magico-del-Agua-Magic-Water-Circuit-3-Lima.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8731 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Fuente-del-Arco-Iris-Rainbow-Fountain-El-Circuito-Magico-del-Agua-Magic-Water-Circuit-3-Lima.jpg\" alt=\"A water fountain in all the colors of the rainbow.\" width=\"750\" height=\"1000\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8731\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A fountain in all the colors of the rainbow.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It was pitch dark after the laser light show, which made for a great time to take pix of the dazzlingly illuminated fountains. Fuente del Arco Iris (Rainbow Fountain) is a multi-tiered one that has water jets synchronized to colored lights.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8738\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8738\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Tunel-de-las-Sorpresas-Tunnel-of-Surprises-El-Circuito-Magico-del-Agua-Magic-Water-Circuit-4-Lima.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8738 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Tunel-de-las-Sorpresas-Tunnel-of-Surprises-El-Circuito-Magico-del-Agua-Magic-Water-Circuit-4-Lima.jpg\" alt=\"Archway of water jets\" width=\"900\" height=\"725\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8738\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">For those preferring a tamer interactive experience, try walking beneath a tunnel of water jets!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>T\u00fanel de las Sorpresas (Tunnel of Surprises) was one of my (and seems like everyone else&#8217;s) favs. An endless line of visitors walk under an archway of water jets that always shoot up and land in exact spots so one can stay reasonably dry walking through the tunnel.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8732\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8732\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IK-Restaurante.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8732 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IK-Restaurante.jpg\" alt=\"Restaurant bill was rolled up like a cigarette in the mouth of the god of prosperity. Elaborately presented mignardises were hidden in cape gooseberry husks and disguised as polished pebbles.\" width=\"900\" height=\"698\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8732\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the times I was happy to see a bill&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It was good that Peruvians dine late, as by the time we left the park, it was after 8:30 pm. We went to IK Restaurante and found the elegantly presented food to be innovative and its ambience restorative after our hectic day. At the end of the meal, our waiter brought us the most elaborately presented dinner tab and mignardises we\u2019ve ever seen.<\/p>\n<p>The doll, decked out in Peruvian paper currency, was Ekeko the god of prosperity and the traditional cigarette in his mouth was replaced with our bill. The festive \u2018tree\u2019 was covered with paper ribbons, balloons and sweets stashed in cape gooseberry husks, while the wooden tray had 2 chocolate \u2018pebbles\u2019 mixed in with a pile of real ones. It was a befitting ending to a memorable evening!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8728\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8728\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Churos-Pishpirones-Wild-giant-Amazonian-snails-stewed-with-turmeric-chorizo-and-spicy-chili-peppers.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8728 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Churos-Pishpirones-Wild-giant-Amazonian-snails-stewed-with-turmeric-chorizo-and-spicy-chili-peppers.jpg\" alt=\"Wild giant Amazonian snails stewed with turmeric chorizo and spicy chili peppers\" width=\"850\" height=\"638\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8728\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Incredible edibles.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anthony_Bourdain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anthony Bourdain<\/a> put <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amaz.com.pe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00e1maZ<\/a> on the map for armchair foodies through his award winning TV series <a href=\"https:\/\/explorepartsunknown.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parts Unknown<\/a>. \u00e1maZ is synonymous with creative contemporary cuisine using ingredients sourced from the Amazon jungle. Despite booking months ahead, we were only able to snag a 2 pm lunch reservation on Sunday. The crowded restaurant was buzzing and it still took a while to get seated. The dishes while exotic and unique, didn\u2019t all pan out, but a standout was the Churros Pishpirones, wild giant Amazonian snails stewed with turmeric chorizo and spicy chili peppers. The park also features undulating walls and benches covered in mosaics inspired by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/feature\/antoni-gaudi-who-is-he-famous-works-1234575349\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antoni Gaud\u00ed<\/a>&#8216;s broken tile technique called <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.sagradafamilia.org\/en\/the-trades\/trencadis-mosaic-hallmark-of-gaudi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trencad\u00eds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8735\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8735\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Peruvian-Cooking-Class-Pisco-Sour.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8735 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Peruvian-Cooking-Class-Pisco-Sour.jpg\" alt=\"Pisco Sour, Peru\u2019s national drink with recipe on chalkboard\" width=\"900\" height=\"536\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8735\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pisco Sour, Peru\u2019s national drink.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Always on the lookout for an interesting cooking class, we learnt to <a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/s-america-travel-blog-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prepare alpaca 3 ways<\/a> on our last visit. This time we went with <a href=\"https:\/\/peruviancookingclasses.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peruvian Cooking Class<\/a> for a seafood centric menu. After the hotel pickup and requisite market tour, we arrived at the home of Chef Hector, who was Creative Head Chef at Maido, one of the best restaurants in Lima. We were promptly taught how to make Pisco Sour so we could enjoy the fruits of our own labor.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8736\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8736\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Shrimp-Causa-Rellena.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8736 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/interspace-design.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Shrimp-Causa-Rellena.jpg\" alt=\"Mashed potato terrine stuffed with shrimps \" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8736\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shrimp causa rellena.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Causas are mashed potato terrines filled with, in this case, shrimps and homemade mayonnaise. The bright color comes from Aji Amarillo, an orange yellow chili pepper ubiquitous in Peruvian cooking.<\/p>\n<p>The lunch class included ceviche, shrimp causa rellena, grilled scallops with parmesan, 2 drinks \u2013 Pisco &amp; Passionfruit Sours \u2013 and a dessert platter of Peruvian fruits. We decided to walk off all the food by doing some shopping on our last day. We lucked out at Sol in the tony Larcomar shopping center where some of its silky soft alpaca sweaters were on deep discount. It was a nice finale to our travels in the Land of the Incas. Despite the 3.5-week long trip, we\u2019ve barely scratched the surface.
