Colorful armchair in postmodernist style
Artful Seating.

The Proust Armchair was initially created for Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara by Alessandro Mendini in 1978. The flamboyant design was a fusion of Victorian baroque style with contemporary artistic expression. Seen as a statement against mass production, the chair featured an intricately hand-carved frame and upholstery meticulously hand-painted in a pointillist style, using individual dots of color.

Proust Geometrica was introduced in the early 2000s as a more commercially viable version, while retaining the iconic original’s distinctive essence. Cappellini’s rendition preserves its postmodernist heritage, updating it with modern technological advancements. The vibrantly colorful piece still offers a hand-carved, hand-painted beech wood frame, but is upholstered in a printed pattern, replacing the labor-intensive hand-painted fabric.
