This sofa’s name, Soft Machine, is attributed to the title of a book by US novelist William Burroughs as well as the eponymous 60’s UK jazz rock band. Its avant-garde styling is the brainchild of architect Giovanni Tommaso Garattoni, one of the founders of Bolidismo that succeeded Italian Futurism of the early 20th century.
This new movement celebrates speed and motion, showcasing bold curves and aerodynamic lines. Bolidismo exudes a raw, poetic vibe that’s poised between grace and tension—like something caught in mid-flight.
From Italian furniture brand Adrenalina, the seating’s overall dimensions are 125.98” w x 47.24” d x 37.01” h, and available in an array of colors and materials. To create the sculptural form, the sofa’s sensuous shape is supported by a skeleton of tubular metal covered with high resilience poly-density foam wrapped in dacron.
Created by French designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Italian furniture manufacturer Cappellini the modular Cloud bookcase is as versatile as it is practical. The Lana dinging chair is one of fashion designer Christian Siriano‘s offerings as he forays into the interior furnishings world. The quirky, chunky chair is made of red oak upholstered in ivory bouclé, and is 18” w x 17.5” d x 38” h. Acclaimed Filipino industrial designer Kenneth Cobonpue is a master at incorporating natural materials into lighting and furniture. For those pining for exotic adventures while working from home, Barbar is the perfect antidote: made from natural rattan, wood, cork, and steel, this ‘Office in an Elephant’ will bring the safari to you! Special rattan weaving simulates the elephant’s crinkled skin, but the openness of the work capsule is offset by the large cork bulletin board ‘ears’. The side of the elephant opens up to a work surface, center drawer and bookshelves on the two ends. More storage shelves are stashed in the legs for additional functionality. With ear flaps open, the gentle giant will take up some room – it comes out to 28″ w x 68″ l x 61″ h.
Aside from being a statement furniture piece in your home office, Barbar also provides valuable biophilic design health benefits. Incorporating elements of the natural world into indoor environments have been shown to reduce stress, improve cognitive function, and enhance productivity – a perfect setup for remote workers!!
